Growing your own spiritual practice

meditation

Whether or not you have a group with which you feel comfortable, you can use a range of spiritual practices which most traditions share:

  1. Spend some time on your own on a regular basis. Use this to review what has been of concern to you over the last day or so.
  2. Set up a corner in your home where you can go to be quiet. Go there often, even for a few minutes at a time. Decorate it with objects or pictures that have meaning for you. Change and rearrange them regularly and notice what you change.
  3. Keep a journal – write or draw what matters to you. You could choose to re-read it from time to time to see what is changing.
  4. If you have a specific faith, see how your issues connect with its stories and teachings.
  5. Find a way of meditating that works for you – focus on a specific object which has meaning for you, repeat a form of words that is right for you, or empty your mind completely. Start with only a few minutes at first and do this regularly – it will get easier with practice - and pay attention to anything that comes clear for you at the end of your meditation.
  6. Keep looking for people with whom you can share your discoveries. They will be out there somewhere and most journeys are better with some company!
