Growing your own spiritual practice

Whether or not you have a group with which you feel
comfortable, you can use a range of spiritual practices which most traditions
share:
- Spend some time on your own on a regular basis. Use this to review
what has been of concern to you over the last day or so.
- Set up a corner in your home where you can go to be quiet. Go
there often, even for a few minutes at a time. Decorate it with objects
or pictures that have meaning for you. Change and rearrange them regularly
and notice what you change.
- Keep a journal – write or draw what matters to you. You
could choose to re-read it from time to time to see what is changing.
- If you have a specific faith, see how your issues connect with its
stories and teachings.
- Find a way of meditating that works for you – focus on a
specific object which has meaning for you, repeat a form of words that
is right for you, or empty your mind completely. Start with only a few
minutes at first and do this regularly – it will get easier
with practice - and pay attention to anything that comes clear for
you at
the
end of your meditation.
- Keep looking for people with whom
you can share your discoveries. They will be out there somewhere
and most journeys are better with
some company!
